"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple high-profile supporters have openly begged for the honor.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals often feature them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to make music."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Recognition

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words follow breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound resilience called for a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global fan base.

But the band will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
