Astronaut Shares Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of space.
The group of women also featured experts in different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
